Challenge

Initially the 2 x CumulusPowerTM UPS were designed to support the hospital and provide the necessary resilience for general services. However, the global Pandemic meant that the new hospital needed to provide space for COVID patients. A 26 bed ICU was created in addition to 30 beds for hospitalized patients suffering from the virus.

Results

The project took 15 days to complete. 2 x CumulusPowerTM UPS systems were installed to protect the National Police Hospital and it’s COVID-19 facility.

The Project

Leading UPS manufacturer CENTIEL, has been selected through its regional partner, to supply a range of power protection solutions to the new National Police Hospital in Peru.

The Hospital de Policía Nacional del Perú marks the investment of $100million in the healthcare facility which has been built on the site of an old hospital in Peru’s capital city, Lima.

Work originally began to replace the old hospital in the Jesús María district in October 2018. The six story, 28,344.64 square meter structure first became operational in 2019. It houses 80 medical offices, 128 hospital beds, an obstetric and a surgical centre, an intermediate intensive care unit plus a heliport designed to provide facilities for police officers and their families.

During September 2020, Peru had the 6th highest total confirmed COVID-19 cases world-wide. By October 2020, Peru had been named as the second country in the world
(after San Marino) to cross the threshold of 1,000 COVID- related deaths per million inhabitants.

When the extent of the global Pandemic became clear, the new hospital opened-up space for COVID patients. A 26 bed ICU was created in addition to 30 beds for hospitalized patients suffering from the virus.

With presence in Chile, Peru, and Brazil, CENTIEL’s partner was the logical choice to install the power protection required for The Hospital de Policía Nacional del Perú, including the new COVID wards.

Initially two CENTIEL CumulusPowerTM UPS were installed at the hospital to support the facility and provide the necessary resilience for general services. CumulusPowerTM is CENTIEL’s pioneering 4th generation, true modular UPS which offers offer industry leading availability of 99.9999999% (nine, nines), with low total cost of ownership (TCO) through its Maximum Efficiency Management (MEM) and low losses of energy. Its Swiss quality technology offers the highest levels of resilience and its flexible and robust configuration has been tried and tested in many scenarios the world over.

The two 180kW CumulusPowerTM units were set up in parallel (2x3xIM60) with battery banks made up of four cabinets each containing 200 batteries, to provide a 30-minute run time at 75% load. The installation took four staff just 15 days to complete.

As a result of the of the success of this project, the hospital has commissioned a second phase installation to provide the same level of resilience and back-up for nine other areas of the facility including the datacentre, the adult ICU, new born ICU, the labour room, surgical centre and emergency rooms.

CENTIEL are proud to have been able to play a key role in protecting the power for patients at this important facility during the Pandemic and beyond.
